Lettuce

Here at Stony Hill we grow several different types of lettuce.

We start all of our lettuce from seeds in our greenhouse and they are transplanted into the fields as seedlings.

We are able to grow lettuce all season long due to the fact that we are transplanting lettuce nearly every week and also because we grow our lettuce on white, light-reflecting plastic that keeps the plant cool.

During the CSA season you will see several different types of lettuce.
Green Boston Lettuce: also called Bib or Butterleaf. It is a soft textured lettuce that is ideal for wraps.

Cherokee Red Lettuce: this crispy lettuce adds a great crunch to any salad. The texture is most similar to Romaine. Any red lettuce is higher in nutrients than green lettuces.

Red Leaf Lettuce: this is the most tender of the lettuces.

Red Boston Lettuce: same as Green Boston simply packed with nutrients and a brush of color!

Green Leaf Lettuce: also a crispy lettuce whose ruffled edges hold their shape and catch dressing or toppings nicely. Best lettuce for salads or sandwiches.

We are picking lettuce nearly everyday for our farm market and tailgate markets.

Brandt shows us how he harvests a head of lettuce:

'lettuce' all enjoy this wonderful crop........I couldn't help myself :)
